Talos Energy’s Growth in the Last Five Years has been Nothing Short of Spectacular

In the last few years, very little positive news has filtered out of the oil industry. Certain surges have experienced surges in production that have considerably driven down the price of oil in the global market. At the same time, the exploration for new oil finds has been impeded by continuing geopolitical conflicts and financial crises that hit from time to time. As can be seen, therefore, it has been a difficult last couple of years for oil companies, especially the smaller ones. However, one of the few companies that have come out strong during this tumulus period is Talos Energy. Only 5 years old now, Talos Energy has grown considerably since its formation, in large due to its exploits in Mexico.
For decades now, Mexican bureaucracy prevented private companies from owning oil wells in the country. The decision to nationalize the country’s oil and gas resources had been taken all the way back in 1938 with the aim of protecting the country’s interests. However, after a series of oil reforms in the country, in May 2017 Talos Energy became the first private player to sink an offshore oil well in Mexican territory. Talos Energy is undertaking this project as part of a joint venture that also includes Premier Oil Plc., and Sierra Oil & Gas. Sierra has the biggest stake in the well (40%), followed by Talos (35%), with Premier coming in last at 25%. With the well estimated to hold as much as 500 million barrels, this venture will likely propel Talos into a significant player in the global oil industry
More on Talos Energy

The company is based in Houston, Texas and engages in various stages of oil and gas development, including, exploration and production. The company’s current and past ventures have all been in either the Gulf of Mexico or the Gulf Coast.
Talos Energy is a greatly ambitious company. Despite being relatively young, the company has strategically raised $600 million to fund its expansion. At the same time, it has also gotten into some strategic partnerships that will afford Talos the prerequisite financial muscle to facilitate sustainable growth through projects such as the one it currently has in Mexico.

Talos Energy Joins Global Partnership to Drill in Mexico

It’s never been done before – but now a Houston-based energy company is partnering with two companies in England and Mexico to pursue an oil drilling venture that has not been pursued in 80 years.
In 1938, Mexico nationalized its oil industry – and that means until 2017, no private company or venture had been able to drill in the country. That all is changing with a new partnership among Talos Energy of Houston, Sierra Oil & Gas of Mexico and Premiere Oil of London. The three oil companies began drilling in Mexico in late May in the hopes of eventually extracting up to 500 million barrels of crude oil from the Sureste Basin near the Mexican state of Tabasco.
Experts in the industry are estimating that this new well could contain as little as 100 million barrels of crude oil – but are expecting to find five times that. Known as the Zama-1 oil well, it is located in a basin ideal for drilling. Analysts are predicting that the joint venture among Talos, Sierra and Premiere will produce a high amount of oil.

The venture is expected to last about three months, with an estimated end date in August. Primarly funded by Premiere Oil, which will pay an estimated $16 million for the project, the project is owned jointly by the three companies at various degrees. For example, Premiere has a 25 percent stake, Talos has a 35 percent stake and predictably, Mexican-owned Sierra has a 40 percent stake.

If you haven’t heard of Talos Energy recently, you are about to here more in the news with this historic, global partnership. Over the year, Talos Energy has been rising in the ranks of oil companies, selling two successful companies that drilled in the Gulf of Mexico before founding the Houston-based company. The global outfit, with more than 200 employees in headquarters and in the operations field, is on a trajectory to show its contributions to the oil industry. The joint venture with Sierra and Premiere will continue to be a proving ground for the company.

Talos Energy Opens First New Well in Mexican Waters in 80 Years

The Mexican government has a reputation for entertaining a monopoly of its energy markets, keeping private investors for away. But 2017 marks a change in their policy now that Mexico’s waters have been opened to a select number of companies helping to open up their energy industry.

Texan oil company Talos Energy has partnered with Sierra Oil and Premier Oil of London to enter into this new territory and began drilling in May of this year. This joint venture lobbied the Mexican government back in 2015 for the rights to drill first when it became known that the Mexican government was considering opening its waters to outside investment. It’s the first time a private and foreign entity has ever drilled in this territory since 1938.

They are currently operating the Zama-1 well in the Sureste Basin off Tabasco. Estimates put production of crude oil at 100 to 500 million barrels from this location. This estimate is expected to be the result of a 90-day drilling schedule that will cost approximately $16 million.

This move into Mexican waters is being cited as a much needed win, and not just for the local energy industry. Analysts from Edison Investment Research, have said that the joint venture signals a change in Mexico’s attitude towards foreign investment. Depending on the completion of this initial run, it could encourage the country to open itself up more to further drilling. Industry leaders will likely pay close attention to how Talos, Premiere and Sierra and received, as will leaders of nations who’ve otherwise been unwelcoming to energy companies.

About Talos Energy:

Founded in 2012, Talos Energy is an oil and gas company based in Houston, Texas. By specializing in exploration and production, Talos Energy has been a key player in the development of shelf and deep-water techniques and new technologies in use throughout the Gulf of Mexico.

Talos Energy’s growth can be seen in the creation and eventual sales of large companies like Phoenix Exploration Company and Gryphon Exploration Company.

Exis Capital Founder Selling Works of Art at Auction

It looks like financier, art collector and entrepreneur Adam Sender has new plans for setting the world on fire. After founding and running Wall Street hedge fund firm Exis Capital Management Inc. for over 15 years, Sender’s next step is moving over 400 pieces from his collection at auction.

Sender’s decision to put an end to his corporation hasn’t necessarily shocked the world of finance. The firm saw its fund lose 5.1 percent in 2014, and its peak management of more than $1 billion in funds had fallen to only $75 million by the end of the same year. On top of that, Exis is one of several hedge funds to have announced their shuttering, among them Scout Capital Management LLC and Joho Capital LLC.

Even as he was managing billions, Sender was known as much for his contemporary art collection as anything on Wall Street. Sender has been lauded for his strategic acquisitions throughout the art world. Critics, artists and admirers alike have called his collection intelligent, personal, surprising, rich, engaging and coherent. Sender has always managed to amass works from artists that are on the cusp of fame, including Keith Haring, Dan Flavin, Richard Prince and Cindy Sherman, as well as promising newcomers such as Rashid Johnson and Lucien Smith. The diversity and depth found in Sender’s collection has created a library of material that is considered a treasure drove of desired pieces. It’s expected the upcoming auction will bring in everyone from the curious to the mega-collector.

Former Guggenheim chief curator and current Sotheby’s Chairman of the Americas, Lisa Dennison, believes Sender has a stunning eye for recognizing talent and potential. She attests that he has a “barometer” for it and that Sender has always “looked at whole bodies of work, and in-depth. He was ahead of his time.”

Though he is selling over 400 pieces – many considered to be worth millions by themselves alone – Sender has no intention of giving up on collecting art. He will still have a significant collection even after the auction and he plans to continue exploring the galleries for new works. “This was always long-term in nature for me,” he has said. “Every single thing I bought, I was passionate about.”

Future plans include continuing to loan works for exhibition in museums and to donate major works to institutions. “When I started buying art, I never thought that this was going to turn into what it turned into.” What “it” has turned into is a smart picture of how contemporary art has progressed over three decades. And as the savvy art follower knows, wherever Sender goes, it will be a barometer of how art will trend over the next few decades.
