In this, the second special show focusing on a flamenco style, we look at perhaps flamenco’s most popular palo - the rumba. Rumba is an aflamencao, or flamenco-ised, style, brought over from the New World by Spaniards in the 19th century (note the similarity to the Latin rhumba). It’s a light, fun style that is far more versatile than most of the flamenco palos, and bands like the Gipsy Kings have taken a pop-oriented version of the rumba to extreme heights of fame. We played a selection of rumbas from the traditional to the modern and all the crazy pop, fusion, and more in between, both the clear flamenco and the very borderline cases. Good music, all.
